Buying guide: What is GORE-TEX?

Wherever your adventure takes you, being protected from the elements is an essential. Enter: GORE-TEX. An innovative technical textile that is breathable yet incredibly waterproof and windproof – it’s found in activewear including coats and shoes. But what makes it so special? Our guide is here to give you the low down on this wonder-fabric.

 

How is GORE-TEX made?

To create weather-ready products, the GORE-TEX membrane is applied as a laminate between the lining and outer textiles of the product. There are three types of laminate construction used for waterproof and windproof GORE-TEX in garments, these include:


2 layer construction

Ideal for a wide range of activities from running to hiking, 2 layer construction means that the membrane is bonded to the outer fabric, allowing a separate lining that provides a more comfortable wear. This type os construction is often paired with insulation to keep you warm and dry.


2.5 layer construction

Lightweight and packable, 2.5 layer construction eliminates the need for a lining and is more comfortable next to the skin that the 2 layer style.


3 layer construction

More durable and even lighter, 3 layer construction is bonded to both the outer fabric and the inner lining, eliminating movement between layers for a longer lasting product.

What products use GORE-TEX?

GORE-TEX trainers
