Should I train in marathon gear?

Yes, you should train in the same clothes you'll wear for the race to ensure you have the best marathon running outfit for your body and have broken into your trainers. If chafing occurs during training, consider replacing uncomfortable pieces.

1. Slip on a supportive sports bra

Women embarking on a marathon will need to pick out a sports bra. These typically fall into the low, medium or high-impact category. For running, choose a high-impact bra that protects breasts from repetitive impact.

2. Find the perfect sweat-wicking top

Next, find the right running top. Natural fabrics may be comfortable, but they're not built for workouts. These materials absorb sweat, resulting in a damp and heavy T-shirt. Instead, choose a synthetic material that pushes moisture to the surface to stay dry.

3. Will you need a running jacket?

Does the forecast predict rain? In that case, you'll need a waterproof running jacket. Find a design that keeps you comfortable and the elements at bay. Here are a few things to look out for in your running jacket:

• Weatherproof fabric
• Lightweight design
• Flexible fit
• Breathable material
• Packable

4. Wear weather-appropriate bottoms

With the top sorted, it’s time to shop bottoms. Look for similar qualities to your T-shirt, like sweat-wicking and lightweight materials.

Leggings

Leggings or running trousers are perfect for poor conditions, as they keep your legs dry and warm. Look for seamless leggings made from breathable materials that are not restrictive.

Shorts

If the sun’s shining, shorts will keep you cool during your marathon. Choose shorts in a length that feels comfortable and isn't bulky.

5. Don purpose-made running socks

Avoid socks made from cotton, which absorbs moisture and can cause blisters. Socks made from synthetic materials are a better option, as they're durable and sweat-wicking.

If your marathon goes off-road, consider longer socks to protect your calves. But if you're running on pavement alone, pick a comfortable length. For the best marathon running outfit, choose cushioned socks that bring extra support.

6. Wear well-fitted running shoes

The shoes are arguably the most crucial piece of kit. Poor-fitting trainers can slow you down and be painful to wear. Measure your feet before buying trainers to ensure an accurate fit, and pick a design that best matches the shape of your foot.
