IDEAS & ADVICE

What to pack in a hospital bag

Your due date is approaching, and it’s time to get prepared! There’s lots of things that need to be organised before the arrival of your little bundle of joy, and your hospital bag is just one of these.

It might seem a little crazy, but the earlier you get your bag organised, the better. In the later stages of your pregnancy when even simple tasks get arduous, the last thing you’ll want to do is have to fuss with packing. Besides, babies don’t have a set schedule—they come when they’re ready!

Hospital bag checklist

Naturally, there are a few things that you won’t be able to pack until you’re about to head to hospital – but there’s still plenty that can be prepared in advance of the arrival. Read on to discover our hospital bag essentials.

Luggage

In order to pack your bag, firstly you need to find the perfect one for you! Having a designated bag that is easy to grab and go when the time comes is essential, whether you prefer a suitcase which offers handy wheels and an extendable handle, or a simple holdall style with adjustable straps for a comfortable carry. Choose the best bag for you to fill with all your essentials and make the hospital experience as smooth as possible.

Nightwear

While no two labour experiences are the same, all women can agree that comfort is key. Whether your little one decides to arrive at the middle of the day or at three in the morning, going through labour in some soft and snug nightwear, such as pyjamas or a robe, will help to make things just that little bit easier.

Slippers

Comfort is key both during and after labour, and this extends to your choice of footwear. Save yourself the fuss of putting on your outdoor shoes and bring along a pair of slippers.

Underwear

While some of the labour process is naturally going to be without underwear, you’ll want to pack a few pairs of underwear for the remainder of your time in hospital. Again, the theme here is comfortable—pick full styles in soft, breathable materials like cotton and stay away from anything tight and restrictive.

Muslin cloths

Used for feeding and winding your baby, muslin cloths are especially handy during the newborn stage. Most come in packs of four, so two packs should be more than enough for use during your hospital stay.

Babywear

Whilst cradling your new born baby, it’s essential to keep them nice and warm. While it can be tempting to pack a whole range of adorable outfits, all you’ll really need in the hospital is a selection of sleepsuits and bodysuits. Sometimes, babies come out a lot bigger or smaller than you’d expect, so pack a couple of different sizes to be on the safe side.

Toiletries

Essential toiletries such as skincare, bath and body wash, and shampoo and conditioner will all come in handy during your hospital stay. For maximum convenience, why not find a cosmetic bag to safely store all your toiletries for easy access.

Hairbrush and clips

During labour, brushing your hair will probably be the last thing on your mind—but a hairbrush will certainly serve its purpose for all of those post-labour pictures. Hair scrunchies and clips are also super handy, particularly during labour when you want to keep your hair out of your face.

Preparing your hospital bag in advance can help your labour process be more stress-free, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.
